Preparation Before Birth
As the time of arrival of your baby nears you get excited and just can’t simply decide on what to do for the baby. You want him to have the entire universe and there is no better time to do so then during the period of pregnancy. Also as soon as the baby arrives your lifestyle is bound to get too busy and you to in the early months may feel more tired and sleep deprived to concentrate on any decoration or any other planning for the baby’s room so the best way is to decide and implement before the baby arrives.
While planning your baby’s room you should keep in mind the changes your baby is going to go through in his coming years and planning his room in accordance will help in the long run. You should always keep the safety and comfort of the baby ahead of all other things.
Normally parents plan a separate room for the baby except in cases where already there is a sibling present before and the room is commonly shared. The main purpose is to make the room of the baby safe enough to sustain the coming growing years of the baby. This includes using safe furniture, room accessories and even safe toys. Whatever you opt for “safety” should come first.
The first thing to purchase would be a cot; out of the many options a thin plain sparse cot would be best. Anything that might heat, tangle or in any other way hurt the baby should be avoided.
If you are into decorating the baby room, opt for toys and other baby related accessories that are firstly soft and not too small for the baby to choke at. Also it is best to place these toys (preferably cuddly ones) on the floor and not on the cot.
Also when choosing the paint color for the baby’s room makes sure that the paint is non-toxic. Also there are low allergy paint available in many stores if your budget allows opt for one of those.
Another safety measure to be taken is placing safety locks on all windows of the baby’s room. If you have long windows in the room or if they are low on the ground placing bars in front of them is very considering. Also curtains or blinds whatever is being used should be plain and no accessories should be present which may in any way act as a threat to the baby such as long cords or beaded accessories attached.
Mobile toys are great especially in getting attention from the baby but as soon as the baby grows his arms are going to stretch beyond your imagination and he could trip or fall in trying to have one such toy to himself. It is recommended that mobile toys should not be placed in the baby’s room at least until he can walk.
The baby bedding should be natural fiber made and should be flame proof. Same goes for the mats and rugs present in the room. No cords or beaded embroidery should be present in the bedding, window covers or any other furniture upholstery.
For couples who are on a limited budget, installing a fire alarm is more important than other embellishments. Also make certain that an electrician secures all sockets by placing child proof covers on them. Also no loose cords should be present in the room.
If heating services are to be provided to the room, make sure ducted heating method is used as it is the safest. In case of an electric or gas heater a safety guard should always be present which is flame and heat proof.
